Take part in an ancient Greek ritual!

Discover the fascinating rituals of Northern Greece in this hands-on workshop. According to folklore, the ritual evokes Dionysos, god of fertility and wine, drawing a parallel between Dionysos’ death and his subsequent resurrection by Zeus, and the arrival of spring after the dormancy of winter.

In this ceremony the ‘Bell Bearers’ wear goat pelts and tall conical hats and make a wild racket to chase away evil spirits that could affect the fertility of the land and its springtime reawakening. If you’re up for some noise, then come along and make your own ‘Arapis’ bell belt and shaggy ‘Barbota hat’.
